BEDTIME ROUTINE GUIDE

A simple bedtime reading routine.

A repeatable way to make story time feel familiar, cosy and easy to share without turning books into a sleep-training tool.

Keep the routine simple enough to repeat

A bedtime reading routine works best when it is easy to do again tomorrow. It does not need a complicated chart or a long sequence. A familiar place to sit, one or two books and a clear ending can be enough to mark the transition from the busy part of the day to something quieter.

Let the child choose between a small number of books

Offering a choice can make story time feel collaborative without turning the whole shelf into a negotiation. Two or three familiar options are often enough. Re-reading is not a problem: returning to the same story can become part of what makes the routine feel familiar.

Use the pictures as part of the reading

Picture books do not need to be read straight through at exactly the same pace every night. A child may want to spot the moon, count stars or point out a favourite character. Those little pauses are part of shared reading and can make a short book feel rich without making the routine complicated.

Choose stories that settle after the adventure

A bedtime story can still contain a problem or mystery. The important part is where it lands. Stories that return to warmth, rest, home or reassurance can give the reading session a natural closing point.

That pattern sits at the heart of The Little Night Department. The Moon Polisher begins with a stubborn mark on the moon and ends with a kinder understanding of what the mark really is. The Yawn Collector follows the town's yawns until the collector finally realises one belongs to him.

Books do not need to promise sleep

A bedtime book does not have to claim that it will make a child fall asleep. Its job can simply be to give an adult and child a pleasant few minutes together before the day ends. That is the approach behind The Little Night Department: short illustrated adventures designed for cosy shared reading, not sleep-training promises.
